How to list variations when you have GTIN exemption?

Still figuring things out, made a seller account, and am doing intensive research. I wanted to sell a product with multiple variations and I have no idea how to do that since it asks for an ASIN/UPC for each variation when trying to create variations.

Isn’t the whole point of GTIN exemption to not be restricted by UPC code requirements? I’ve searched every corner of the internet for an answer.

My product is one that sells better with colour and model variations, so is there any way to list variations when you have GTIN exemption?
