New seller advice

I’m thinking of getting into selling on amazon, the products would be cleaning supplies, canned foods, anything like that. I’m just wondering how do you work your way to the first page when someone is searching for a product? If I went and posted a product, how would anyone see it? Do I just wait for someone to buy it? Is there a way to promote it?
