Parent ASIN inactive due to being out of stock.

Today I noticed that my parent ASIN for my private label FBM products was inactive. This was due to it being out of stock. Two questions

1) Why would the non-sellable parent ASIN need stock? 2) Could this be the reason I have been unable to win the buy box for my own items for several days?
