Question for sellers who charge restocking fees or issue partial refunds for MFN returns.
We’ve got a few people at my company insisting that we should be charging restocking fees for MFN orders that are returned in less than new condition. For example, say we sell a two pack of tool batteries brand new in a blister pack for $150. Buyer says “ehh I changed my mind” and sends it back (at our expense). We get the item back out of retail packaging bc he threw it away and we the customer a restocking fee. They want to do this as a way to recover cash, and also as a deterrent to get customers to basically stop renting items. What do you do in this case? What do you do if for example, they didn’t return the batteries you sold them, but return clearly used and old batteries?
I’m dead set against restocking fees becuase I cannot possibly see how this ends in a positive outcome and I’ve always treated things like this as the cost of doing business. Just cIt just seems like a lot of bean counting, especially when we process around 100 orders per day. Curious to hear from sellers who’ve implemented restocking fees or patial refunds for returns. Does Amazon protect you against negative experience for the customer? What are the pros and cons of this? Thanks in advance.
