Sponsored Ads for Items with Multiple Sellers?

I’ve been selling on Amazon for awhile, but have never done any sponsored ads. How do ads work for items that are sold by multiple sellers? We’re a distributor and most of our items have multiple competitors on the same listing. If I run a campaign for a particular item I want to sell, how do I ensure I’m not simply generating traffic for the listing with no guarantee of winning the buy box once the customer gets there. Forgive my ignorance, I just have no idea how this works and maybe I’m just using the wrong terms but there’s shockingly little information on this scenario either through Reddit or YouTube.
