UK Vat Number Required?

Hi, I’m just starting my first venture on Amazon. I’m almost ready to order my inventory and I’ve just seen that Amazon requires you to upload a UK VAT number – is this definitely correct? I thought you didn’t need this if you weren’t turning over a over 80-100k?

Can I sell without it? I am based in the UK.
